Meet Marylin Scothern
Title: Human Resources Manager
Location: Farmington, UT
Time at Domain Systems: 20 years
“HR is about creating an environment where people can do their best work.”
What do you enjoy most about your role at Domain Systems?
I love supporting people. If someone’s having a rough day or dealing with something, I try to be kind and take the time to listen. Even if I’m busy. HR to me is about being present, approachable, and focused on helping people succeed.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I spend a lot of time making sure things run smoothly behind the scenes, like, payroll, benefits, time tracking, onboarding, compliance. And with our invoicing system, I work closely with the team to keep entries accurate. One wrong line item can trigger the wrong invoice, so I do a lot of proactive checks and corrections.
Marylin is the glue that holds the office (and often the entire company) together. With her finger on the pulse of everything happening around here, she’s our own Radar O’Reilly, often bringing things to our attention before we’ve even thought of them.
If I ever need to know who did what, when, or where—Marylin is my go-to. Her friendship is a gift, and her presence on the team is truly irreplaceable.
– Randy Pettit, President, Domain Systems
What’s the biggest challenge you help the company manage?
Timekeeping and invoicing accuracy. We use automated systems, but engineers are human. When time gets logged to the wrong place, it can snowball quickly. I help catch and fix those issues early so they don’t impact clients or cash flow.
How would you describe Domain’s culture?
Supportive. We’re not just heads-down working, we check in on each other. It’s collaborative and thoughtful, even when things get busy. There’s a real sense of mutual respect.
What advice would you give to someone building an HR function from scratch?
Hire someone with empathy. Someone who cares and isn’t distracted by everything else in life. You need focus, warmth, and someone who can balance policy with people. That’s what makes HR effective. It’s not just about the rules, but the relationships.

Marylin’s work philosophy starts with satisfied employees and ends with successful clients.
Describe yourself using only an emoji.
🙂 A simple smile. Everybody reacts to it, and sometimes that’s all people need.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Spending time in the mountains, working on DIY projects, and being with my family. I like to keep learning, even outside the office.
Marylin approaches every task with a focus on mastering it quickly—never at the expense of accuracy or attention to detail. She consistently went above and beyond, often anticipating needs before they were expressed. Over time, we came to realize how rare these qualities are, and we feel truly fortunate to have had her on our team.

We’ll miss her warm greeting smile, her prim and proper British accent, and her uncanny ability to put a stop problems before they even had a chance.
